Himeiji Castle Koko-en 姫路城西御屋敷跡庭園好古園

Nov. 6th. 2025 Michi no eki Yokawa Michi no eki Yokawa is a splendid place to stay. The parking is extensive and for the most part flat. It is also away from the road. The toilets at the far end of the parking are open on both sides and are very good. The onsen is very good too with a large outside bath. It even has a dog run. Today we are going to Shodoshima. It is the last few days of the Setouchi Triennale Art Festival. So we set off for Himeji and the ferry terminal. But first we visit the gardens adjacent to Himeji Castle. Himeji Castle Nishi-Oyashiki-ato […]

Tomonoura, setting for Ponyo 鞆の浦

April 16th. 2024 Our Fukuyama izakaya, both of them, sadly proved to be a disappointment. The hotel, Vessel Inn, was unexpectedly excellent from a cost/performance standpoint. We had a view of the Illuminated Fukuyama castle from our window. The buffet breakfast was from D’s Japanese perspective very good and from the continental side OK. Tomonoura We set off for Tomonoura. This very old coastal town has a long history but came to unexpected prominence more recently as Miyazaki Hayao stayed here for a period while developing his Studio Ghibli movie Ponyo. This has placed it on the more general tourist itinerary, but Japanese history buffs are more interested in its […]

Kibitsu Jinja & Korakuen Garden 吉備津神社、後楽園

April 15th. 2024 Michi no eki Kayo is reliable for a quiet night but the facilities are limited. It does provide rubbish bins. It is not a bad place though undermaintained. Kibitsu Jinja From the michi no eki we set off for Kibitsu Jinja (shrine). This is reputed to hold the second largest, wooden, shrine building in Japan. Only Yasaka Jinja in Kyoto is larger. Not just large, it is more interesting than the average shrine. The shrine is dedicated to Kibitsuhiko, who fought and defeated Ura who, myth suggests, was terrorizing the local people. Ura was considered a demon or Oni so his castle was Onigajo (Kinojo). Kibitsuhiko is […]

Kinojo, the demon castle? 鬼ノ城

April 14th. 2024 Michi no eki Muraoka Farm Garden Michi no eki Muraoka Farm Garden is a good place to stay and may be good place for the people want eat high quality beef ‘Tajima Beef’. It does, on first impression, look tacky, just an ill lit, run down yard but the facilities are in fact excellent, and it is generous in rubbish bin provision. It is dark. The weather may provide you with a splendid star bonus, but you have to watch your step. I also recommended you not park next to or behind the adjacent ramen shop as the kitchen duct blows into the car park. Daisen-ji to […]

Gifu Daibutsu to Gujo Hachiman 岐阜大仏

April 10th. 2024 Michi no eki Fujihashi is recommended for an overnight stay at least on a weekday at this time of year. Others have experienced Bosozoku groups making a lot of noise on summer weekends. It has ample parking, good to excellent toilets and an onsen. Today we make our way to Gifu city. We plan to see the Bamboo Buddha. Last time we passed this way we did not find it and this time it was almost as elusive. Gifu Daibutsu Our navi. Steers us through one-way systems and directs us down very narrow two-way streets that have no right to such distinction. Eventually, we see the temple […]

Matsuyama Castle, an original castle tower. 松山城

March 30th. 2024 Michi no eki Nakayama is very busy from early morning. I can only ascribe this to the excellent facilities. The day is warm and hazy as we set off for Matsuyama Castle by way of Unozaki Toge (Pass) and Tobe town(PR53). The pass provides an interesting, narrow, winding drive with typical Shikoku steep mountainsides and narrow valleys. We were hoping for spectacular views from the top of the pass but were hemmed in by trees. Nevertheless, a good route to choose. Dropping down into Tobe town we were expecting a village, but it is quite a substantial place warranting a dual carriageway. The central meridian decorated with […]

Shiramizu and Harajiri waterfall 白水の滝、原尻の滝

March 27th. 2024 Aso 阿蘇 Leaving Minami Aso michi no eki Kugino, we set off for Mt. Aso itself. In recent years, sadly, it has not been possible to approach the active crater and peer into the bubbling cauldron. At the topmost car park, still some distance from the crater, the buildings are deserted and derelict. There is still an amazing landscape all around but nothing to the spectacle we could wonder at some years ago. That said, the colour of the dead grasses, bushes in nascent bud, the seams of soil and ash black, orange and red are wonderful. We did not visit Kusasenri this time, but there is good […]

Kirigamine Yashimagahara Wetland, Empty Walking Path in April 霧ヶ峰八島ヶ原湿原

April 15th. 2022 Michi no eki Imai Megumi no sato gives us a quiet night of pouring rain but by parking next to the handicapped spaces dry access to the toilets. Kirigamine Yashimagahara Wetland 八島ヶ原湿原 Today we set off for Yashimagahara Wetland in Kirigamine, here there is a walking course of a few kilometres depending on which circular route you choose around the marshy ponds. We had planned to follow the Venus line to this spot, but part of the route is closed until the end of this month, April. So we followed the section that was open and drove for some distance in thick fog with no views at all. […]
